Alex

Eyes open. No music. Not saying a word. Trying to be invisible. That’s the spell: invisibility. Or, unnoticableness, anyway.
WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!!
I bit my tongue so wouldn’t ask Ms. Slaphappy why she hit me. Straightened my posture, in case she thought I was slouching.
Silence. No slaps.
I was starting to get the hang–
“YOU NEED TO TRY HARDER!!”
WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!!
“Yes, Ms. Slaphappy.”
“CONCENTRATE!!” WHAM!! WHAM!! “I STILL SEE YOU!!”
“Just… just give me a moment, please, ma’am. I–I shall be neither seen nor heard.”
“Okay.”
Phew. Now, I just need to relax again and–
WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!!
“I thought you said you were going to give me a little time.” I said through a gritted beak.
“I AM!” WHAM!! WHAM!!
“You’re still hitting me…”
“THAT’S TO MAKE YOU GO FASTER!!”
What does she think I am, a horse? You can’t just–
WHAM!! “Hurry it up! I’m tired of looking at your fat, ugly, featherless wings!”
I wouldn’t say featherless. Not anymore. My plumage was mostly back, which was kind of the–
WHAM!! WHAM!! WHAM!!
I jumped to my feet. “STOP IT, YOU CRAZY BITCH!!” I could feel the rage inside me. Threatening to come out. Can’t let that happen.
I ran out the door, into the hallway.
“GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT!!” Ms. Slaphappy was chasing me.
I ran down the hallway, looking for someplace to hide. No. Hiding isn’t going to work this time. I need to get out.
Seeing a fire exit, I pushed it open, the alarm screeching. Yeah, not allowed to use it except in case of fire. But I think this is close enough.
I didn’t stop running until I reached a clearing far away from the school.
I turned around to make sure I was alone, then spread my wings and let loose the flames.
It felt wonderful. My entire body engulfed in flame, glowing like a miniature sun.
I breathed a sigh of release. I hadn’t had a burn like this since I got here. I’ve been holding it in for fear that I’d be caught. But I realized that wasn’t going to work. Now that my feathers are mostly back, so is my power. And the more I hold it in, the harder it is to control.
I smiled. Time to play with fire.
“Oh my God, Alex!” Lilly called from behind me, “You’re on fire!”
