“A trap.” Jason sighed. “That’s certainly a possibility.”
“It doesn’t change anything,” Zack said, “Trap or not, we need to get those artifacts back.”
I nodded. I’d been in danger plenty of times before, and this time, I wouldn’t be on my own. I’d have Zack–and probably Jason, too–with me.
Then again, if it’s the same people who shot that arrow at me… I shouldn’t underestimate them.
“You said their arrow drained your magic?” Jason asked.
“Yeah. I–I don’t know how long I would have lasted if I hadn’t–”
“You should stay here.”
“What? Why?”
“It’s too dangerous for a kid like you. Even if you are a god.”
“I can handle myself.” It came out a bit harsher than I had intended. “I’m a lot stronger than I look.”
“Prove it, then. Show me what you can do.”
I thought for a moment. My main power is controlling the air, manipulating currents and wind, but… that doesn’t work too well indoors. Besides, it’s not about raw power; it’s how you use it.
“Jason…” Zack gave him a look.
I smiled. I know just the thing. I looked around for suitable targets. Settled on a patch of air right in front of me, and another one behind Jason.
I took a deep breath, concentrating on my targets.
“Well? Let’s see it.”
“Quiet. It’s delicate.” I closed my eyes, envisioning the desired result. Deep in the back of my mind, I felt the change. A powerful connection forming between my targets. I concentrated harder, and managed to stabilize the connection.
I opened my eyes and jumped into the first target. A few seconds later, I came out the other end, right behind Jason.
“Hi.”
He spun around, a look of total shock on his face.
I smiled. “Like I said, I’m a lot stronger than I look.”
“Is that…” Zack stared at me, clearly amazed.
I nodded. “Teleportation portals. When enough mass enters one end, it gets transported to the other.”
“That’s awesome. Can I… can I go through it?”
I shook my head. “Single-use only. And it’s best not to go through them too often. If the portals destabilize while you’re in there, or part of you gets left behind…”
“Oh. It’s still pretty cool, though. I didn’t even know that was possible.”
“Neither did I, until I did it the first time.”
“Interesting,” Jason said to himself, “Teleportation, nigh-immortality, mind control… It’s no wonder we have to keep them locked up.“
